A move doesn’t fall apart on moving day. It falls apart in week three, when nobody booked the truck, the freezer is still full, and the post office thinks you still live at the old place. This checklist is the whole move on one countdown — eight weeks out to the first week in — with every task written down in the order it actually needs doing, and counters that tell you how much is left.

Already have our Moving Planner? That one runs moving day itself. This is its companion: the eight weeks before, where the move is won.

The countdown — 42 tasks in 7 bands:
• 8 Weeks Out — book the movers or the truck, get quotes, start the declutter, order boxes, measure the furniture against the new doorways.
• 6 Weeks Out — landlord notice, time off work, school records, the freezer clean-out, packing the non-essentials, photographing the electronics before they are unplugged.
• 4 Weeks Out — change of address at the post office, bank and cards, utility transfers at both homes, one full room packed every week.
• 2 Weeks Out — pet care for the day, car service, library books back, a first-night box for every person, the freezer defrost.
• 1 Week Out — walkthrough and key handoff confirmed, the new place cleaned before furniture lands, truck parking sorted at both ends.
• Moving Day — the mover walkthrough and inventory, meter readings and photos, every closet checked, the old keys handed back.
• First Week In — beds, kitchen and bathroom first, locks changed, the water shut-off and breaker box found, the neighbours met.

The spreadsheet — 5 tabs (Excel and Google Sheets):
• Move Details — both addresses, moving day, movers, key handoff. Type today’s date and it works out your days and full weeks to go, plus a progress summary that reads all the other tabs.
• Countdown Checklist — all 42 tasks with a Done column; the progress box counts each band and the whole move.
• Packing Tracker — 12 rooms with planned and packed box counts and a % per room (86 boxes in the example — the kitchen alone is 14).
• Change of Address — 19 people and organisations to notify, with room for your own, a date-told column, and a running count.
• Utilities & Services — 12 services with provider, shut-off date at the old home and start date at the new one, so nothing is dark or offline on night one.

The example is a real-shaped move, not a fantasy. The filled EXAMPLE workbook is the Rivera family’s move from Sarasota to North Port, Florida: moving day January 9, 2027, opened eight weeks out — 55 days to go, 13 of 42 tasks done, 60 of 86 boxes packed, 11 of 19 addresses notified, 7 of 12 utilities arranged. Every number is worked out by the formulas from the tabs themselves, so you can watch the whole system agree before you type a thing.

The printable — 4 pages:
• Pages 1–2: the full countdown with checkboxes, and a write-in strip for the two addresses, moving day, movers and key handoff.
• Page 3: the packing tracker (planned counts pre-printed for a typical 3-bedroom home) and the moving-day essentials list — the 12 things that ride with you, never on the truck.
• Page 4: the change-of-address list and the utility transfer tracker, with lines for providers and off/on dates.
• Same content in US Letter and A4.
